Living Sustainably with Toki

January 20, 2025

Here at Toki Mats, our mission is to create a safe place for every child to play as they take on the world. Our play mats are designed to keep little ones safe from bumps and bruises (even on hardwood floors), but safety means so much more to us than just cushioning. From start to finish, every Toki product is made with your baby and the environment in mind. Our materials are sourced responsibly, our products are produced in factories with respected ethical standards, and we have extensive safety certifications that guarantee that our products are as organic and non-toxic as we claim.

Third-party certifications

We are proud to use only high-quality materials with certifications from GOTS, GOLS, OEKO-TEX, ACT, SGS, TÜV, Eco-Tech, Intertek, and REACH.

  • Our cotton covers are made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton.

  • Our support pillows are made from GOLS-certified organic latex foam.

  • Our latex foam, bamboo jersey covers, vegan leather covers, play tents, and picnic blanket wadding are certified by OEKO-TEX Standard 100.

  • Our play cube foam is REACH certified in compliance with the European Union’s REACH regulations.

  • All Toki products are tested through ACT, SGS, TÜV, and Intertek to ensure compliance with CPSIA and ASTM standards.

Reducing waste

We are always looking for ways to reduce waste every step of the way, from production to shipping. Since our materials are certified by third parties like GOTS, the waste generated from production is tracked and managed by our suppliers to meet these certifications and adhere to local laws.

To reduce inventory waste, we add products with minor cosmetic flaws to the “Imperfect” section on our website, where they are sold at a reduced price. We also partner with Good Buy Gear to sell returned or unsellable stock at a discounted rate. This further reduces waste by extending the life of our products and ensuring they are reused rather than discarded.

All Toki products are built to last and designed with modular components for easy reparability. Our smaller products, such as support pillows and play cubes, were developed as a way to utilize fabric scraps from larger items, like our play mats. As a result, these scraps are turned into high quality, functional play products instead of being discarded.

As a final step before going to their new homes, Toki products are packed in organic cotton drawstring duster bags and shipped without packing slips or invoices to minimize paper waste.

Saving energy

Our suppliers use solar panels in their facilities and also employ energy-efficient practices throughout their operations. Our production schedules are optimized to run high-energy-demand processes during off-peak hours.

Protecting biodiversity

A portion of all our proceeds goes toward rainforest conservation. We partner with One Tribe, a climate action platform that connects us to rainforest protection projects that help reduce and store CO2 from our atmosphere. As of December 2024, we have protected over 246,000 rainforest trees with our donations.

We are currently in the early stages of assessing our supply chain's impact on biodiversity and deforestation, such as reviewing where our raw materials are sourced from, as well as requesting certifications from our suppliers to clarify their sustainability commitments around deforestation and land use. We are working to identify regions and practices that may pose risks to biodiversity, and working with our suppliers to ensure alignment with compliance regulations.

Creating a healthy workplace

We are committed to fostering a supportive and equitable workplace for both our direct employees and the workers in our supply chain. As a small, woman-owned business, we ensure that all internal policies comply with local laws and prioritize creating a positive work environment. This includes offering flexible working arrangements, fair compensation, and opportunities for growth and development.

Our commitment to ethical and fair labor practices is shared by the suppliers we work with. They are certified by internationally recognized standards, such as BSCI, SEDEX, AMOFRI, and SA8000, which ensure compliance with human rights, child labor policies, anti-slavery measures, and fair working conditions. Our Tier 1 suppliers are disclosed on our price transparency page, and we conduct regular audits in line with these certifications.
