Why child-safe products are so important to Toki Mats

In the past, I’ve written about how important sustainability and ethics are to me, especially as Toki Mats has grown. But with that growth also comes a lot of responsibility! With all of our activity mats for children, our focus has been on creating child-safe products made from plant-based ingredients to ensure your little one can play and fall on our mats safely. 

With this post, we wanted to delve a little deeper into the ethos of Toki Mats and talk about the importance of creating child-safe products and the decisions that go behind that!

Why child-safe is important to us

So first things first, why is child-safe so important to us? It might sound obvious because how can we create products without thinking about safety! But to us, safety is a deeper concern across all aspects of the product, how it’s made, and how your little one uses it. That means thinking about what materials will be used to create the mats, what kind of padding to add that’s both safe and sturdy, and how the mats are actually manufactured. 

At each step, a lot of hard work goes into identifying safe and child-friendly materials, sourcing from responsible suppliers, and ensuring that we are as sustainable as possible. That’s all part of being child-safe. Because it’s not just about creating the mat itself to be safe, which is a major priority. But it’s also about ensuring that our decisions to be child-safe are also in balance with protecting the environment. 

Our goal has always been to create products that bring you and your little one joy and that you can trust when it comes to prioritizing safety.

How Toki Mats are child-safe

So how does that translate to Toki Mats? We’ve worked hard to create activity mats for children that are non-toxic and padded as that helps ensure that the mats are soft yet firm, so children can play and fall without worry. Little ones need room to play, to grow, to fall, and pick themselves up, and that’s what Toki Mats are designed for. 

Toki Mats are also child-safe because of the materials used to create the mats. Only non-toxic materials are used, and all of our activity mats for children are free from PVC, phthalates, and lead. In addition, we work with a team to manufacture the mats, and each one is hand-assembled and thoroughly checked for quality and safety to make sure no toxic materials creeping into the process. 

We’ve also spent a lot of time researching the manufacturing process, and only partner with factories that have fair working conditions and labor compensation.

The mats have natural foam inserts that are made from latex foam, derived from the sap of rubber trees, making them springy, breathable, and vegan! You can read more in our feature on latex foam here to get more insight into why we’ve chosen this material and the process around how it’s made. 


As Toki Mats grows, it’s really important for me to create products that provide joy and are safe so that they can be enjoyed for years to come. Quality and safety go hand-in-hand, and that’s not something I can compromise on.
